A PETERHEAD man was assaulted after a fight broke out over a bowl of chips.

The resident of the Queen Street B&B was cooking chips in the communal kitchen when a dispute arose with another man.

Peterhead Sheriff Court heard on Thursday that Jed McGowan (20), whose address was given as Queen Street, Peterhead, repeatedly punched the man on the head and body causing him injury.

Procurator Fiscal Richard O’Brian said that the man had been cooking chips when the dispute over the ownership of food turned to a struggle and then to a fight, resulting in McGowan assaulting the man.

Defence agent Leonard Birkenshaw said that McGowan was regretful about the situation and that he had consumed a substantial amount of alcohol before the incident took place.

He said: “Mr McGowan has a difficulty with alcohol and found himself in a regrettable situation while staying in temporary accommodation.”

Sentencing him to 160 hours community service with a supervision order, Sheriff Edward Savage said: “It is unfortunate that a fight over food has ended up in court.”
