Peterhead’s Zion Church has set up a Community Cafe to help those who are in need of a little extra support.
The Cafe was launched in June this year and it runs on a Wednesday from 12 noon until 3pm for coffee and food is served between 12 noon and 2pm.
It offers a soup and sandwich along with tea or coffee for £3.50.
Church administrator Paul Morgan said: “We encourage as many people as possible to come and buy their lunch and with the proceeds we give out free vouchers to those who are in need of extra support to come and get their lunch for free.”
Some of the vouchers are given out by local pharmacies and also in conjunction with local council departments and social services.
Mr Morgan added: “The idea behind the community cafe was to provide a way to allow the community to come for lunch and while they are here, building up a relationship with them and finding out what their needs are that we can help with.
“So far we have met with many people who have come back during the week and discussed problems they may have over coffee, others we have written cv’s for, helped with application forms and benefit claims, the most common need just seems to be being someone they can come and talk with, so the best thing more often than not we can offer is a cup of coffee and an ear to listen.”
They are always looking for volunteers to help serve in the cafe as well so visit the Zion Church for more details.
