The new dance fitness craze sweeping the country, Clubbercise, arrived in the north-east for the first time recently at the MACBI Community Hub in Mintlaw.
Clubbercise is an easy to follow dance fitness class that feels more like a night out than a workout.
It is taught to club anthems from the 90s, to the latest chart hits in a darkened room with disco lights, and participants get re-usable glow sticks to use.
Angie Urquhart recently became a Clubbercise instructor and decided to make the launch of this exciting new class a charity event on Friday, January 16.
For the past few years Angie has helped an enthusiastic team from Mintlaw Academy to fundraise for Cancer Research Relay For Life Peterhead, so after being asked by Elena Kurilko (team captain of Baewatch) what they could do for this year’s fundraiser, this seemed to be a good idea.
Angie’s work colleague at MACBI, Leanne Reid, decided she could do a charity studio cycle class at the same time to the Clubbercise playlist on the night.
Within hours of the event being advertised it was clear that this would be bigger than anybody every imagined!
Nearly 90 clubbers and 14 studio cyclists attended on the day and they managed to raise an amazing £1,050.
Angie said: “It was an amazing atmosphere and super to see two totally different fitness classes working together to raise money for Relay For Life.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who attended and to those who helped on the night.
“Huge thanks also go to Linda Nicol, Garrett Bar Mintlaw who very kindly donated £100 to the event.”
Clubbercise sessions are held every Wednesday from 7-8pm and Friday 6.50-7.50pm at MACBI and places must be pre-booked in advance.
Lorraine Coleman, event chair of Relay For Life Peterhead, said: “The Clubercise/Spin class Relay fundraiser was an outstanding success.
“Congratulations and well done to Baewatch for setting up this tremendous event, everyone really enjoyed it.
“A massive thank you goes to Angie Urqhuart and Leanne Reid for donating their time and for leading it so enthusiastically - they really put their heart into it and that showed when Angie was overcome at the announcement of the phenomenal amount raised which was £1,150.
“Cancer Research UK will be able to put this to great use to help those affected by cancer.”
Lorraine added: “Thank you to MACBI for the use of their hall.”
This year’s RelayFor Life Peterhead will be held on the 4/5 July.
