peterhead twin brothers, Peter and Andrew Duncan have rasied almost £4,000 for Cancer Research after penning a book on their time at sea.
Andrew, of South Road, and Peter of Golf Road, put their heads together to come up with the book, entitled ‘Mair Tales From Twin Deckies’, which they agreed to sell in aid of the charity.
With an initial target of just £750, the brothers were stunned when they were inundated with orders and were more than delighted when they handed over a cheque for £3,750 to Peterhead Relay for Life organiser Angie Shearer and Hell’s Kitchen 2 team captain, Kathleen Chalmers, on Tuesday night.
Andrew told the Buchanie: “I had been in hospital getting treatment for cancer at the end of last year and because of the treatment I wasn’t allowed to be in contact with other patients..
“I had told my daughter I was bored so she subsequently provided a pen and paper and I started to write down some memories of our time at sea,” he said.
“I began writing the book in November, but it really has been in the research stage for around 50 years!
“I have a knack that once I start writing it’s difficult to stop until the story is told, so I just kept going until it was finished.
“The book is more or less the story of our lives with some stories added in which we were told about and incidents we got involved in throughout our fishing career,” he said.
“Andrew and I both have fantastic memories and that’s how the book was put together.
“We then approached Alan Buchan to see if he would print the book for us and he did it very economically given the cause.
“Initially we started out with 100 copies but we ended up selling more than 750.
“They are everywhere - from Northern Ireland to Whalsay in the Shetlands - and people are still asking for copies,” he said.
“Andrew and I are both well known in the Shetland Islands as most of our fishing was done in their waters, so the book has been in big demand there. There are even copies of the Fair Isle!
“We decided to donate the cash to Cancer Research as there’s hardly a family which hasn’t been touched by this disease.”
The books are still available and can be obtained by emailing Peter at firstname.lastname@example.org or calling Kathleen Chalmers on (01779) 477693. The books cost just £4 each with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK.
Meanwhile, the brothers are currently working on a second book, adding: “We’ve still got plenty of memories and we’re getting to work on the next instalment!”
