Plans to bring budget hotel chain Travelodge to Peterhead’s Chapel Street have taken a step forward.
The company first announced they were coming to the area last July and were in talks to build a 120-room guest house which would create 16 jobs and bring millions of pounds of revenue to the local economy.
Councillor Alan Gardiner has been present at a number of meetings with the developers and landlord of the existing Chapel Street shops in order to push the project forward.
Speaking to the Buchanie, cllr Gardiner said: “The developers have assured me that they have signed a contract and it is in place to bring Travelodge to Chapel Street.
“It’s frustrating that it has taken this long but we are well down the road and hopefully we can get work started soon.”
Buchan businessman Ian Devenish owns three properties at the Chapel Street site and is delighted with the positive progress.
He said: “The meetings with the developers and Alan have been very encouraging andthe arrival of Travelodge means that there will be a total refurbishment of the whole building.
“This is great for us as it gives us the whole town centre and it will help it look the way it should look.”
Mr Devenish added: “We are currently looking for a start date from the developers and health and safety checks still need to be done.
“It has been a few years since the last thorough one so after Health and Safety Scotland give us verification that it is safe to start work we will get going.
“The scaffolding is up to prevent anything from falling down and hurting anyone below, and the back of the building has been closed off to ensure the area is safe.”
A spokesperson for Travelodge confirmed to the Buchanie that they are coming to Peterhead and added: “We plan to be open towards the end of 2015.”
It had been suggested that Travelodge were moving their hotel to the new Buchan Gateway retail park on the outskirts of Peterhead, however this recent development has quashed these rumors.
Hotel chain Travelodge currently operates over 500 hotels in the UK, Ireland and Spain.
