SNP Fisheries Spokesman Calum Kerr joined Banff & Buchan MP Dr Eilidh Whiteford last Friday for a fact finding tour of North-east fishing industries.

Mr Kerr and Dr Whiteford went along for an early morning visit at Peterhead Fish Market, before touring the fish processing facilities at Northbay Pelagic and Thistle Seafoods.

The MPs then joined local skipper A.J. Buchan and Ian Gatt, chief executive of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Federation, aboard the pelagic vessel Lunar Bow.

The visit provided an opportunity for Mr Kerr to speak first-hand to managers and workers in the town.

It also gave him the chance to discuss some of the challenges and opportunities facing both fishermen and processors.

Commenting on his visit, Mr Kerr MP, SNP Westminster spokesperson on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: “I was delighted to visit Peterhead and talk to those involved in fishing and processing.

“ I appreciate the time everyone spent meeting me, and they have certainly helped to deepen my understanding of their work.

“This is a critical industry and it is vital that it is fully supported.

“I know that the Scottish Government is absolutely committed to doing that.

“As the SNP’s Westminster spokesperson on the subject, I’m also determined to ensure that this vitally important sector of the Scottish economy is given a strong voice in the Commons.

“This visit has helped ensure that I can do that.”

Constituency MP Eilidh Whiteford added: “This was a great opportunity for Calum to meet those involved in the fishing industry, and to gather some experience of what is involved.

“The tour included discussions with representatives of both the catching and processing sectors.

“ I would like to thank everyone who met with us for their valuable input.

“Fishing doesn’t get nearly the attention it should at Westminster - however constituents should be assured that Calum and I will continue to fight for a fair deal for our crucial fishing industries,” she added.
