Councillors at the Buchan Area Committee have pledged their support for Shell’s Carbon Capture and Storage project at Peterhead Power Station.
An application by Shell for full planning permission at the site went before the committee on Tuesday, June 2.
Councillors heard that the application received no objections and they unanimously agreed to refer the application to Full Council.
As the project is deemed a national development, it must go before the Full Council for a final decision, and this has been scheduled for Thursday, June 18.
Shell project manager William Lindsay spoke at the meeting and told councillors that this would be a demonstration project and the “first of its kind”.
Councillor Alan Gardiner said: “This is a great opportunity for Peterhead to lead the way and I’m excited to see it come forward.”
Fellow councillor Stephen Smith added: “I commend the level and scope of community engagement by the Shell team and especially the number of people in the community that have taken part.
“This is a chance for world leading technology to be located in the Buchan area and it would attract businesses to locate here.”
