Fraserburgh SNP councillor Charles Buchan has been elected as chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Fisheries Working Group.
The recently-retired Fraserburgh Academy teacher comes from a fishing family and went to the whitefish and herring fishing before studying at Aberdeen University.
The Fisheries Working Group held its first meeting since the election in Fraserburgh Council Chambers on Friday where its first act was to elect a new chair to replace the previous incumbent, Cllr Peter Argyle.
Cllr Charles Buchan defeated Independent councillor Michael Watt, who was also nominated for the chairmanship.
Commenting after his election, Cllr Buchan said: “It’s entirely appropriate that someone from Fraserburgh should be the chair of the council’s Fisheries Working Group and I’m honoured to be elected to that position by my fellow councillors.
“I see my role and that of the Committee as very much providing support for the fishing industry in terms of lobbying on issues and ensuring councillors and council officials are fully briefed on emerging issues affecting the industry.
“I am looking forward to working with the Committee members of all parties on these issues.”
