SIX girls are doing Buchan proud and taking to the stage at various Freestyle Championships throughout the UK.
Hollie Duthie (9), Shannon Flett (11), Courtney Cunliffe (11), Melissa Barrack (10), Mya Linklater (10) and Lauren Gilles (13) are preparing to make an impression at this year’s World Championships and with classes almost every night, they hope to take some trophies home with them.
Apart from Mya who has been dancing for a few years now, the girls only began dancing at the end of January and attend classes almost every night of the week. All the dancers are part of the Fiona Quilietti School of Dance which they regularly visit in Edinburgh and whilst at home, they are under the supervision of student teacher Stephanie Donaldson.
At their most recent competition which was held on May 15 at Grangemouth, the girls took a bundle of trophies home with them, Hollie received a first place in the Under 10 Beginner’s section, Shannon won two firsts and was the Overall Beginner Winner in the Under 12 category, Courtney won a third and fifth trophy home, Melissa also won a third and Lauren won two fifths at her first competition earlier this year. Mya has many trophies and recently won third place at the European Championships for the under 10’s in Somerset, and also came fourth at Disco kids which was held in Blackpool in December.
Hollie’s mum Stacy told the Buchanie: “It’s amazing how well all of the girls have done since they started the classes. There is always one of them winning trophies and they are all good friends.
“All of the mums are huge supporters and we all go along to support them at their competitions, I always have my tissues out, I think I’m worse than Hollie!
“They are lucky to have a teacher like Stephanie in the area who is really dedicated, she gives up a lot of her spare time for the classes which run every night and we are all very grateful.”
Stephanie added: “I’ve danced since I was younger and I love teaching the Quilietti girls based in the Peterhead area.
“On July 1 the girls have the World Championships in Blackpool and I’d like to wish them all the best of luck.”
