A Peterhead couple who celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last year has won a competition as the Toon’s longest loved-up pair.
Robbie and Mary Morrison were the winners of Asda Peterhead’s search to find the “longest married couples” which was launched in the run up to Valentine’s Day.
The couple who are both born and bred in Peterhead, went on their first date to a village hall dance at just 17 years old, and after two years together were married at The Imperial Hotel.
Robbie said: ““We have been incredibly lucky. I genuinely feel blessed to have spent the past 70 years, and vast majority of my life, with Mary.
“Our first date was in 1943 and we were only teenagers. I don’t think either of us could have foreseen spending our lives together.”
The pair have been together ever since that first date and while Robbie worked as a joiner and Mary was a sewing machinist, they raised a large family.
They have three sons, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Robbie said: ““I can’t believe that we have won the competition and hope our story proves to any young couples just starting out that it is possible to have a long and happy marriage.
“My advice for a long and happy marriage would be to be give and take; trying your best to be just as considerate to one another 70 years down the line as the day you met.”
Grant McHardy, general store manager at Asda Peterhead, added: “We were so happy to welcome Mary and Robbie into the store to show our appreciation for their long and happy marriage.
“They are regular customer’s here at Asda Peterhead so it’s good to see that the pair still love each other just like the day they first met.”
To congratulate the platinum couple, Asda Peterhead has given the couple a complimentary bottle of champagne, a bouquet of flowers and a selection of chocolates to enjoy on Valentine’s Day.
