The Aden Bike Challenge, cancelled at the start of last month due to bad weather, has been rescheduled to take place in the summer.

Snow and hail put a halt to the March 10 event and the plans of hundreds of local cyclists, but organisers were still keen to build on the success of the first event last year.

Buchan’s favourite family-friendly bike ride will now be held on Sunday, June 2, when families, individuals and businesses are all encouraged to get on their bikes

It takes in some of the most beautiful local sights, following a ten-mile trail starting at Peterhead Community Centre, along the Formartine and Buchan Way, ending in the beautiful surroundings of Aden Country Park in Mintlaw.

It was cancelled to ensure the safely of participants and volunteers both during the event and afterwards on the journey home.

Every pre-registered entrant was contacted to explain and apologise for the cancellation and organisers stayed on at key locations to catch those who turned up on the day.

Those who paid have been asked if they would like to be automatically registered for the reorganised event.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Head of Transportation, Ewan Wallace, said: “I’m sure everyone can appreciate we didn’t cancel the event lightly – we didn’t want to disappoint the many people who wanted to take part, but we wanted them to be safe too.

“We’ve had a lot of good feedback about the event from those who took part last year and we hope it might be even more popular if we get good weather in June.

“The event had been timed to coincide with Mother’s Day celebrations and activities at Aden, but we’ll look at a summer date in future to avoid the worst of the weather.”

Taking a lightly trafficked route, the event is not a race and is suitable for everyone regardless of biking experience or fitness.

The Aden Bike Challenge is part of the Buchan Feeling Good Festival, promoting health and wellbeing and the benefits of cycling as a sociable and active way to improve physical and mental health.
