The aquarium was last open in August 2019, as it was unable to open in 2020 due to the pandemic

The Buchanhaven Harbour SCIO board of trustees announced the aquarium’s closure after deciding it was too costly and citing a lack of volunteers to run it.

The petition was launched by ‘Buchanhaven Harbour’ on Sunday and within the first 24 hours had attracted around 100 signatures.

It states: “We the people of Peterhead and the surrounding area implore the Buchanhaven Harbour SCIO Committee to reverse their decision.

“The new chairman and trustees have said the aquarium is not viable and that they never received any business plans.

"Yet they were sent a pretty detailed business plan by two very well respected former trustees (Joseph Yule and Roy Ritchie) as well as being offered volunteers to help get it up and running.

“Many people worked tirelessly to secure funds from regeneration schemes as well as put money in from their own pockets in order to install the aquarium which showcases our local seaside and helps to allow children to understand our delicate marine eco systems.

“This was a huge success thanks to the hard work of the old committee and volunteers. This was an amazing hit with local schools/disabled children/local nurseries as well as the wider community. The joy on children faces seeing Sealife up close said it all.

“So we all think there is no reason why the new chairman and trustees can’t do the same and give it a chance.

“The decision would be a backward step in the regeneration of Peterhead and an irresponsible move in our global journey towards sustainability and reduction in carbon emissions.”

Former trustee Joseph Yule was not involved in launching the petition, but he confirmed: “I came up with quite a detailed business plan with the figures that showed the aquarium paid for itself.

"The previous committee put their heart and soul into providing this facility for the community, but now the situation has gotten toxic and split the village – it’s a real mess!”
