Flats at former dental surgery approved

Plans to turn a former Peterhead dental surgery into two flats have been given the go-ahead by councillors.

Flats will replace the former home of the dental surgery in Queen Street

An application for planning permission to change the use of the former Queen Street Dental Centre at 95 Queen Street has been approved by Aberdeenshire Council.

The application will see a number of alterations made at the premises and refurbishment work carried out on the building.

The former surgery will be split in two to create a three-bedroom flat on the ground floor and three-bedroom flat on the first floor.

The ground floor flat will have a lounge, kitchen area and one bathroom, while the master bedroom would have an en-suite.

Meanwhile the smaller first floor flat will have a shared kitchen, lounge and dining area and the third bedroom would be located in the attic.

The existing ramp leading to the building will remain while a communal vestibule entrance will be created to enable access to the two flats. The building had been used as a residential property until 2006 when it was converted into the dental surgery.

The Queen Street Dental Centre relocated to new larger premises next door at 93 Queen Street following approval in 2019.

The proposed work increased the height of the rear section of the building. A number of objections had been received regarding the application, particularly with regard to car parking on one of the town’s busiest thoroughfares.

Aberdeenshire Council officers recommended the application be approved stating that reverting the former surgery back to residential use would “not erode the character or amenity” of the area and that it would have no significant effect upon the amenity of the neighbouring houses. Officers also said that there was “sufficient” on road parking to accommodate residents of the new flats.

A photographic survey was taken of the existing buildings and structures to ensure that a historic record of the building was made for inclusion into the National Monuments Record for Scotland and in the local Sites and Monuments Record.

Queen Street Dental Centre has remained open throughout the lastest lockdown.
