It will arrive in Aberdeenshire on the Sunday before touring Aberdeen City the following day.

The baton is visiting more than 400 communities, offering people across the nation a chance to be part of the excitement, celebrations and countdown to Scotland’s biggest-ever sporting and cultural festival, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and show their support for the home team.

The baton arrives in the North-east on June 29 with the celebrations starting in Stonehaven at 7.30am. It will leave Dunnottar Castle and make its way to its final location in Peterhead, via Banchory, Dunecht, Kintore, Port Elphinstone, Inverurie, Oldmeldrum, Turriff, Banff, Macduff, Fraserburgh and Mintlaw.

A range of events and activities are being planned in both local authority areas to reflect the important role of sport by visiting schools, sporting facilities and leisure centres, encouraging communities to get behind Team Scotland, get involved with the Games and encourage people to participate in sport. Details of these will be released in the next month, along with details of local batonbearers.

Aberdeenshire Provost Cllr Jill Webster welcomed the announcement, saying: “I am delighted to be welcoming the Queen’s Baton Relay to Aberdeenshire. I am sure that people in all our communities will be keen to support local batonbearers and begin the celebrations leading up to a fantastic Commonwealth Games.

“The relay is a chance to showcase the incredible Aberdeenshire scenery and vibrant towns and villages to a global audience. All eyes will be on us following the baton’s global journey through the other 69 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.”

Local agencies are working together to support the Queen’s Baton Relay, information will be available on the websites for Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and on social media. Information bulletins will also be prepared to keep businesses informed of the arrangements.

The Queen’s Baton Relay route in Scotland has been planned by Glasgow 2014 in partnership with Commonwealth Games Scotland and 32 Local Authorities.
