A string quartet is to visit Bennachie to premiere a unique work about the crofting history at the hill.

The event will take place at the beautiful location on Saturday, September 13.

The Dee String Quartet will perform ‘Whispers in the Woods’ written by local composer Petra Vergunst.

This will follow on from a pre-concert poetry walk where the composer will share what inspired her string quartet.

Commenting on the event, Petra Vergunst said:“I have visited the hill on many occasions and have always loved the way The Colony Trail reveals some of the incredible history of the place.

“I have always been intrigued by the way the people who lived there moved on with their lives - moving to the commonty after being marginalised from farming communities, and then being marginalised further when landowners divided the commonty between them and started to charge rent.

“I have explored this history and my own reaction to it in the composition and - in more detail – through poetry,” she said.

The string quartet and pre-concert poetry walk are funded and otherwise supported by the Hope Scott Trust, Forestry Commission Scotland, sound and the Bailies of Bennachie.

Jackie Cumberbirch for the Commission’s team in Aberdeenshire, said: “This is a unique interpretation of one of the most evocative and interesting periods in Bennachie’s long history.

“Anyone coming along to this event will, through the music and poetry, experience the landscape – and connect with our local history – in an exciting new way.”

The poetry walk will start at 1.30 pm from the Bennachie Centre and will return there for the performance at 3 pm.

Both events are free, but places for the pre-concert poetry walk are limited.

Should you wish to reserve your place, don’t hesitate to call the Bennachie Centre on 01467 681470.

All are welcome to go along and enjoy this event.
