Mintlaw’s Saplinbrae Hotel & Lodges opens the doors to a new dining experience later this week, with the launch of Restaurant 1756 by Kenny Smart.

Kenny, who will launch the new restaurant on August 1, has established himself as a well-known chef in the Buchan area and has worked alongside the likes of Celebrity Chef Nick Nairn.

The restaurant will offer diners a relaxed, fine dining experience in beautiful surroundings.

Saplinbrae Hotel & Lodges is a family-run business, with mother and son team, Jackie and Gavin Watt overseeing the daily management of the hotel.

They took over the hotel in July last year and have transformed the hotel into a warm and welcoming destination for guests from near and far.

“We’ve had to invest a lot of time in order to re-establish the hotel in the area and have been slowly building things up over the last year to re-gain consumer confidence,” explained Jackie.

“It has been gratifying to see our many guests enjoy our meals and services over this time but with Kenny coming on board we will be aiming to raise standards even higher.”

Jackie and Gavin decided to team up with the well-seasoned chef, who has consulted the pair over the last eight months and together they are all very excited about the possibilities for the new business going forward.

“We’ve called it Restaurant 1756, as that’s the year Saplinbrae House was built,” explains Kenny.

“The restaurant will have an emphasis on local produce and will focus on what is in season at that time of the year.

“We are looking to provide a relaxed, fine dining experience for customers seven days a week, offering a wide range of dishes to suit all tastes.”

Kenny goes on to explain: “It was always an ambition of mine to open my own restaurant.

“When I was with Nick Nairn it helped me hone my skills and I developed an even greater appreciation of food and how important presentation of dishes can be.”

In addition to the usual restaurant experience, Kenny says: “We hope to host ‘demo and dine’ events throughout the year.”

He explains that groups can come along and watch a meal being prepared by him, receive a few hints and tips during the session and then sample the dish for themselves.

The recipe will then be given to all attendees for them to try out at home for themselves.

The new restaurant will be holding a special opening event on July 31 for suppliers, staff and family, with the official opening on August 1.

Restaurant 1756 by Kenny Smart will be open Monday to Saturday from 5pm to 9pm and on Sundays from 12noon to 8pm.

Lunches will be served Monday to Saturday 12noon to 2.30pm followed by vintage afternoon teas until 4pm in the hotel’s Ferguson
lounge.

The restaurant will cater for up to 60 diners at any one sitting, and booking is advised for those wishing to sample the delicious food on offer.
