YOUNG Peterhead dancing sensation Mya Linklater has picked up a major accolade by winning the ‘Disco Kid’ event - the largest, most prestigious and toughest freestyle disco competition of the year.

Mya (11), is the only dancer ever from the Grampian region to have won the competition in the 30 years it has been running.

She came fourth in the event two years ago and last year came second to a fellow classmate from her dance school, The Quilietti School of Dance in Aberdeen.

Dancers from all over the UK and Norway aim to qualify throughout the year to get a chance to compete in the event, and Mya danced on her own in front of thousands of spectators at Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom and to more than 40 judges.

Mya competes all over the country throughout the year and has travelled to Ireland, Wales and Somerset in 2012.

Commenting on Mya’s success, mum Heather said: “This December was extra special and Mya’s dance teachers, Fiona Quilietti and Dennis McHugh, are extremely proud and hope her success will encourage other youngsters from the area to take up dancing.”
