Morton went into the match in a three-way race for the title with Forfar and Stranraer while Peterhead were assured of finishing sixth before the match barring a goal blitz from Dunfermline.

With everything to play for the home side took the first chance of the match as a Ross Forbes corner was met by Sammy Crichton, whose header was cleared off the line by Steven Noble.

Peterhead then broke the deadlock after 17 minutes when Gary McDonald headed the ball in from close range after the midfielder got on the end of a Noble corner.

The goal takes McDonald’s tally for the season up to 7, just one goal less than striker Rory McAllister, which is even more impressive as the former St Johnstone player only joined the club in February.

Then came the moment which would change the course of the match.

League 1 Player of the Season, Declan McManus, was baring down on the Toon goal as defender Scott Ross pulled the striker back and was shown a straight red.

Morton made the extra man count and were level 36 minutes in when Michael Miller fired in from outside the box.

Then only 3 minutes later Morton were ahead as Mark Russell’s long shot caused Graeme Smith troubles in the Toon goal and the stopper was unable to keep the ball out.

Peterhead came out fighting in the second half as Jamie Stevenson caused the home side problems, but Morton secured the victory and the title in the 83rd minute when McManus netted his 20th goal of the season after rounding Smith and slotting the ball into an empty net.
