Young bowlers welcome islanders

ON the first weekend of September Buchan Indoor Bowling Club’s junior section played host to a junior team from Shetland Indoor Bowling Club.

The group from Shetland were welcomed at Millview Guest House, Stuartfield, where they changed for the day’s programme at BIBC.

After a warm-up session all the juniors enjoyed a light lunch at the club before starting the programme of bowls.

The excitement was building as both teams (including four girls for the first time in the Buchan team) played a singles match and three pairs matches with Buchan running out winners by three games to one, going down in the singles by one shot.

In the second series of games, Buchan Juniors were again successful winning three games to one, the singles and two pairs.

Buchan Juniors put up a great show against a slightly more experienced group of junior bowlers from Shetland. All games were played in the best spirit and once again friendships were formed among the young players.

The Buchan Juniors wish to thank all the helpers and supporters who made the day so successful. A short presentation ceremony took place when club president, David Hay, presented gold and silver medals to both teams. The vote of thanks was given by Buchan Junior Steven Melville.

After supper all the juniors enjoyed a session of ten-pin bowling at Fraserburgh.

Thanks were expressed to Mintlaw Boys’ Club for the use of their mini-bus to pick up the Shetlanders from Aberdeen and transport them throughout the weekend and to Millview for the excellent hospitality shown to them.

Junior coaching for the new season has begun again at BIBC on Friday nights at 8.30pm.
