Peterhead Boxing Club staged a sell-out show at the town’s Palace Hotel earlier this month, with former undisputed lightweight world champion and International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, Ken Buchanan, attending as the guest of honour.
The evening was held as a fundraiser for the club and spectators were treated to a marvellous evening’s entertainment of bouts which saw Peterhead boxers take on the rest of Scotland.
The main event was a bantamweight contest between Artur Selivanovs (Peterhead) and Danny Fairweather (Lochee Boys).
Selivanov’s come forward approach was great to watch and his all-action style against slick boxer Fairweather blended well to provide the crowd with a very exciting contest.
The capacity crowd cheered their local hero on and it was Artur that emerged victorious with a unanimous points decision.
After the bout Buchanan had a lengthy chat with Selivanovs and it was clear to see that the boxing legend was very impressed with the Peterhead boxer’s performance.
The senior boxer of the night award went to Peterhead heavyweight, Liam McCrave.
He was up against Alasdair Rollo (Kincorth) and the crowd were also treated to one of the fights of the evening.
It was the Aberdeen man who started brighter before a big right hand from McCrave burst Rollo’s nose.
A couple of times the doctor was called to check the bloodied heavyweight and after such a gruelling contest where both men gave it there all, Rollo deserved to see the final bell.
The Peterhead boxer took a unanimous points decision and a re-match between this pair would certainly be welcomed by the fans.
The young boxer of the night award went to Alex Gartshore (Peterhead) who took a majority decision over Brendan Howett (Lochee Boys).
The Peterhead boxer looked to be well in control of this schoolboys contest and it was perhaps slightly surprising that the judges decision was not unanimous.
The evening started with a skills bout between Taylor Mills (Peterhead) and James ‘2 Cool’ McCool (Kincorth) which was followed by some very close and entertaining contests.
Cian McPhee (Claymores) defeated Kieran Ritchie (Peterhead) by majority decision and the journey back to Kinlochleven was also a happy one for Cullum Clement (Claymores) who defeated Ross Young (Peterhead).
Young started well boxing off the back foot however the tight guard of Clement was hard to get through.
In the end the Peterhead boxer ran out of gas and a unanimous decision points win went to Clement.
George Reid (Lochee Boys) and Ethan Cowie (Peterhead) went toe-to-toe for three rounds and it was the Dundee boxer’s more accurate punches that took a close majority points decision.
Other Results were as follows:
Rory Whelan (Springhill, Lanarkshire) won by majority decision against Craig Campbell (Granite City); Dan McLaren (Elgin) won by majority Ddecision against Sarunas Gestautas (Peterhead); Lee Fearon (Peterhead) won by majority decision against Gary Kinmond (Lochee Boys), and Ben Hewitson (Peterhead) won by unanimous decision against Andrew Smart (Elgin).
