Three life guards at Peterhead Swimming Pool are to take part in an endurance challenge for charity this weekend.

Kevin Henderson, Ian Stephen and Gillian Stewart are set to undertaking a sponsored swim in aid of Aspire, a charity which supports people with spinal injuries.

The group is doing the sponsored swim as part of a nationwide initiative which is organised by the charity.

The ‘Channel “Swim 2014’ encourages individuals or groups to swim 22 miles in up to 12 weeks, from September 8 to December 1.

However, Kevin, Ian and Gillian are preparing to swim 22 miles between them in just one day, on Sunday, November 23.

Gillian and Ian are swimming 7.5 miles each while Kevin will swim seven miles, with each taking turns in a relay to complete the challenge.

All three members of the group have been training hard for the event. So far, the life guards have raised just under £600 between them.

Commenting, Ian said: “We wanted to do a challenge and we chose this one, but we decided to put a twist on it by doing the challenge in one day.”

Gillian commented: “We’re trying to make a last push to get as much sponsor money as we can for such a worthy cause.”

Kevin added: “It’s going really well and everyone should be fit enough to do this. We’ve all been training hard.

“We’re all looking forward to the challenge.”
