From Newburgh to London - Athletics Club are kept busy

The 5th annual ‘Run Garioch’ race was held last month with representatives from Peterhead Athletics Club taking part.

Over the years the event, which was held this year on Sunday, March 20, has grown into a field of 7000 runners for a 5km or 10km or half marathon.

Representing the Peterhead club in the 10k were John Robertson, Susan Strachan and Linda McGee - who achieved a personal best .

The half marathon is a scenic run with views of Bannachie but a challenging route as it includes the infamous Dubstone hill.

Representing the club in this race were Neil McRitchie, Barry McGee, Stewart Chalmers, Barbara- Ann Needs, Tanya Rennie and Maria Willox with Tanya and Stewart achieving personal blast times for the 13.1 mile distance.

The following Sunday, March 26, saw members of the club taking part in second annual ‘Newburgh Beach Bash’ event.

The ‘Beach Bash’ is a multi terrain event over pavement, trail, sand dunes and beach over the Forvie National Nature Reserve.

This year proved especially challenging for the participants due the strong winds.

Despite the winds that did not deter Jennifer Robertson who was the third female overall and Linda McGee second in her category.

Also pictured taking part were Tanya Rennie, John Pascoe, Sami Deddaoui and Barry McGee.

Sunday, April 10, members took up the challenge of the Manchester Marathon along another 9000 runners.

All went well for Maria Willox,Tanya Rennie, Karen Runcie, Andrew Davidson and his wife Gail until they crossed the line only to discover a problem with baggage collection with up to a two hour wait to get one’s bag of warm clothes.

Despite that good times were achieved by all with Tanya and Gail completing their first marathon.

On April 12 the club held an indoor decathlon event for juniors at Peterhead Community Centre.
