Ellon in battle to survive

Ellon Rugby intend to banish their relegation troubles at the Meadows on Saturday when they wrap their Caley Division 1 against Strathmore.

The visitors have nothing to play for and as a consequence will be less likely to field their best side.

A win would see Ellon go clear of the bottom two who will then enter into play-offs against sides from Caley 2 North and Caley 2 Midlands.

Ellon captain Nikki Fraser said: “We really should not be in this position, but I’ll back us to win against a side we drew with down at Forfar.

“I just hope we have a good turnout at one of the big occasions for the club. We are likely to have our strongest side out. It should be an exciting day, even if it is going to be pretty tense.”

Currently the Meadows men are one place above St Andrews University and Mackie FP’s and could, in the event of the Stonehaven side losing both their remaining two games, avoid the play offs without having to win against the Inchmacoble visitors.

Not that Fraser was happy to go down that route. He said: “We would rather have our destiny in our own hands.”
