Double podium weekend success for Peterhead runners

A record-breaking number of runners took part in Stonehaven’s half marathon on Sunday, July 5, which attracted the most participants in more than 20 years.

Organised by the Stonehaven Half Marathon Running Committee, the event attracted runners from across Scotland.

The overall winner was Ron Gauld who followed up his win at the Peterhead half marathon by powering round the hilly Stonehaven route in a time of 1:18:10.

Peterhead Athletics member Sandy Hastie crossed the line in 1:36:49 and was rewarded by being first in his age category while Maia Willox and Martin Kerrigan both achieved personal best times for the course.

Meantime at the Portsoy 10k Shelly Duncan was leading overall lady with a winning time of 40:24 while Alan Reid showed his determination and will power by coming home in 43:09 despite a pulling a hamstring well before the half way point.

Stewart Chalmers came home in a personal best time for the distance.

Meanwhile on Tuesday juniors enjoyed relay baton handover training from Ewan Calder from Peterhead, three times Scottish Champion at 400 meteres and Stan Walker, current Indoor European champion of the 200m relay.

Over the summer Peterhead Athletics club meets at trackside at Catto Park on Tuesdays from 5.30pm for juniors and 6.30pm for seniors. everyone welcome to come and try three training sessions for free.
