Some of the best young athletes from the North of Aberdeenshire met at Catto Park last week to celebrate the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

The P5-P7 pupils represented Mintlaw, Ellon, Peterhead and Fraserburgh in a number of athletics events as part of the North Aberdeenshire Primary Commonwealth Games.

Competitors were selected from local qualifying events and excelled in a variety of running, throwing and jumping events.

There were some great individual and team performances by pupils from across the Buchan and the North East and congratulations go to the Mintlaw team who were named the overall winners.

Medals were presented by Vikki Bunce who will be representing Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games as a member of the Ladies Hockey team.

Aberdeenshire Council’s chair of Education, Learning and Leisure Committee, Isobel Davidson said: “The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer is a fantastic opportunity to engage and inspire local primary children with sport and emphasise the benefits of participating on a regular basis.

“A key priority of Sportscotland is to promote the legacy of the Commonwealth Games and we hope this event and the many projects taking place in local schools, after school clubs and through community groups will encourage pupils to take up sport and continue participating on a long term basis.”

Vice Chair, Ron McKail said: “This event is an opportunity for primary age athletes from across the Mintlaw, Ellon, Fraserburgh and Peterhead networks to showcase their sporting talents and compete for individual recognition in addition to being an important member of a larger team.

“All of the children participating should be very proud of being selected to represent their area.”
