The bosses at Longside FC and Longside Boys Club have set up a new squad to cater for children who no longer have Sunday football to take part in.

Primary school football was previously hosted at the Mintlaw Astroturf on a Sunday morning by Grampian Police.

However, the amalgamation of the Scottish police forces has left the initiative without funding.

Boys club manager Peter Grant said: “My son Finlay and his friend Harry have just moved up to Mintlaw Academy and found themselves with no club to go to following their primary school football which was run by Grampian Police at Mintlaw Astroturf on a Sunday morning.

“They both approached myself and asked if I would start a 11-a-side football team and play out of Davidson Park, Longside.

“The interest was overwhelming and I was surprised to see exactly how many boys were looking to play football however were unable to play for local boys clubs for one reason or another,

“We have had tremendous support from Longside Football Club as they have supplied us with a home ground, changing facilities and full use of training equipment.”

Mr Grant has had the help of Longside FC boss Ally Hynd - previously of Peterhead Boys Club - as well as fellow Longside Boys Club managers Paul Robertson and Garry Irvine.

Longside have loaned the team their home ground, changing facilities and full use of training equipment.

Mr Grant has thanked sponsors Duthie Motors of Longside, Claymore Homes and JNF Developments, Duthie Motors who have sponsored the kit. He said: “Without this support we could never have gone ahead with this new venture and given these boys a game of football.”

The team are playing in the U13s Juvenile League and travel as far as Insch, Culter, Newmachar and Inverurie on Sunday mornings.

They have got off to a winning start with three wins in their first six games.
