Buchan Ladies have clinched promotion to the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) and will now compete with the country’s footballing elite next season following a hard-fought 2-0 win away win over Troon last weekend.

In a nail-biting final game of the season in heavy conditions, Buchan stepped up a gear midway through the first half, with Danica Ritchie slotting home after a defensive mix up, and Hannah Stewart placing a penalty neatly in the bottom corner to put the Ladies 2-0 up at half-time.

Buchan’s confidence grew in the second half which presented the Ladies with many opportunities to put the game well beyond Troon. However, although there were no more goals, a rock-solid performance from all the players ensured a final three points and promotion to the top flight in women’s football.

Proud of the Ladies’ display all season, manager Ewen Reid said: “For a club from the North East of Scotland to progress from its conception eight years ago to the highest level of Scottish Football is phenomenal and clearly shows the dedication and desire of the players who are ultimately responsible for our success.

“This season will be a difficult one to emulate but I am confident that the players will give their all next season as Buchan Ladies strive to improve and consolidate their position in the Premier League.”

A blend of youth and experience has proven to be the secret of success this season.

Sponsored by Mintra Training Portal, the current Ladies squad comprises both past and present pupils from Mintlaw, Peterhead, Ellon, Fraserburgh, Turriff and Banff Academies all of whom are put through their paces several times a week thanks to the hard work and dedication of coaches, Scott Reid and Mark Forbes.
