Martin Bavidge is set to be celebrated tonight (Tuesday), with a game against Premier League side Aberdeen, the travelled striker featuring in what will be his testimonial fixture.
Bavidge, who arrived at the Blue Toon in 2003 for a club record fee of £15,000, has gone on to represent the club more than 300 times, scoring in excess of 100 goals in the process, and the 32-year-old forward has shown little sign that he may be near the end of his playing career.
Noteworthy performances against both Celtic and Rangers, as well as goals by the dozen, for Peterhead, have seen the man affectionately referred to as ‘Bav’ become something of a club legend in his own right, his name sung by the Blue Toon supporters on most match days.
Bavidge has had his pick of career highlights, going into his testimonial, from having been part of the Inverness Caledonian Thistle side that beat Celtic 3-1 in 2000 to becoming the most prolific player in Peterhead’s history.
Working at an engineering division in Aberdeen, Bavidge has spoken previously on his thoughts of the Blue Toon, saying that he hoped to continue to play a part in the Blue Toon.
“I’m sited logistically for my job at an engineering division, and it’s just the obvious choice for me at the stage that I’m at in my career.
“There have been lots of changes at the club since I’ve been here, many good, and I hope to play here for as long as I can, I want to keep being here,” Bavidge told the Buchan Observer.
Bavidge recently said that he has had a “great time” at a “good club with good people.”
His testimonial, tonight at Balmoor, will signal the club’s recognition for all the tireless forward has contributed throughout his career at the Blue Toon, but Bavidge told us that he has no intention to retire just yet.
Saying that he had not thought about it, the former Forfar man said on the possibility of taking up a coaching role after his retirement: “I don’t know yet, to be honest,” commenting that it would be dependent on how he felt when he finally does decide to hang up his boots.
In the meantime, all Blue Toon fans are invited to attend the testimonial to show their support for Martin Bavidge.
Kick-off is at 7:45pm, with tickets priced at £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s.
