Ten-man Longside fall at first Cup hurdle

junior football

Longside had Glasgow side Yoker Athletic as visitors on Saturday in The Scottish
Junior Cup.

Their cause was made all the harder in the fourth minute when Harris accidentally tripped Maitland on the edge of the box and the referee had no option but to show the defender a red card.

Greg Maitland blasted the free kick into the bottom corner. Almost immediately Longside drew level when Sean Butcher latched onto a poor pass back before coolly guiding it past Winslow in the Yoker goal.

Maitland broke clear on the left for Yoker but he sliced his shot wide. Harvey then had another free header from a Maitland corner but he again headed the ball wide.

McGarva did well to save a Rankin cross and at the other end Butcher put Munor clear but Frew got back to block his shot. Ramsay did well on the left for Longside before crossing into the middle where the ball was played to Munro but the Yoker defence stood firm.

Yoker took the lead again in 35 minutes when Michael Roger fired home from eight yards after good work by Chang.

Butcher had a shot from 25 yards but his effort went over the bar. Roger was sent clear for the visitors but McGarva came out of his goal to save.

A Jamieson pass put Davidson through on goal but his shot was saved by Winslow. Minutes later a fine pass from Munro put Butcher in the clear but he volleyed the ball over the bar.

Winslow made a fine save to turn a Butcher strike over the bar for a corner.

Munro’s kick was cleard as far as Weir and he got it b ack into the anger area. Winslow spilled it in front of Butcher but he couldn’t get a decent shot at it and a relieved Winslow saved. It was then McGarva who dropped a cross and it landed for Bissland but
he fired it wide.

Longside made a change at the start of the second half with Fulton replacing McIntosh. A 25-yard free kick from Butcher was brilliantly saved by Winslow.

Davidson’s kick was cleared upfield. Maitland raced clear on the coutner attack before cutting inside but he fired his shot wildly over the bar.

Jamieson did well to win the ball in the centre of the park before releasing Butcher but his shot was saved by Winslow. Bain made a superb tackle to foil Maitland as he looked set to score.

Longside made a second change when Mackie
replaced Jamieson.

The visitors scored a third in 72 minutes when McGarva spilled a shot at the feet of Michael Roger and he slipped the ball into the next.

Three minutes later a Mackie corner was met by Butcher and his header was briliantly saved by Winslow. From Mackie’s second corner Philip Dyce sent a well-placed header into the net.

Longside then lost the services of Bain when he went off injured to be replaced by Steele. McGarva then produced a brilliant save to turn a Bissland shot round the post for a corner. From the kick David Crerand shot home.

Roger had a great chance to notch his hat-trick when he was presented with a free header but his
effort went wide.

A Mackie corner as cleared as far as Davidson 25 yards out, but he fire his shot over the bar.

Longside can hold their heads high after this performance against a very experienced Junior side who current sit second in their league.

Chris Harris can count himself unlucky to have been red-carded, but even with ten men the players worked their socks off and were unlucky not to get something from the game.

Longside’s next game is away to Dyce Juniors in the Dominos Pizza North Regional Cup, kick-off 2pm.
