Solid cup effort from Longside

LONGSIDE entertained Whitehills in the first round of the GA Engineering Inter Regional Trophy on Friday night and went on the attack straight from kick-off.

New signing, Scott Porter, made several runs down the right but his inviting crosses came to nothing.

Park blazed over the bar when under pressure then the ball was in the net but the referee blew for a foul after the ball came off Ritchie’s arm.

A neat move by Campbell let through Park but Barron came out to smother the midfielder’s shot. The home side’s pressure finally told after 23 minutes when an in-swinging corner from Adams caught out keeper Barron and he could only palm the ball into his own net.

Stephen then fired well over in Whitehills’ first attempt after 28 minutes before Danton headed over from a Porter cross. Longside increased their lead from the spot after Campbell was impeded by Stephen when chasing a through ball. The striker calmy slotted home on the half-hour mark.

However, within two minutes, the away side pulled a goal back when Gibb broke on the left and his cut back was blasted home by the in-rushing Pauling. The same player could have equalised eight minutes later but mis-hit his shot into Thompson’s grateful hands.

The half ended with a Campbell header going wide and another Park run into the box seeing his shot blocked by the keeper.

Whitehills started the better in the second half and Ritchie pulled out a great save from Thomson and then Gray was booked for dissent as the away team pushed forward.

Longside brought on Cameron and Bruce to replace Porter and Ritchie to try and kill off the game. Campbell shot home soon after but was adjudged offside before Adamson was booked for a crude tackle. Stephen again pushed Thomson into a good save before Gibb was booked as Longside exerted pressure to finally win the game.

The third goal came in the final minute when Campbell squared to Danton and the striker shot home to take Longside into the next round after Whitehills had it made it difficult with a plucky display.

Longside will face a much harder task next Saturday when they go to Banchory in their first league game of the season.
