Peterhead kept their fine pre-season form going to move into the second round of the Ramsdens Cup with a narrow victory over Brechin City.

An early goal and another just as City looked set to take charge of the match saw a hard fought 2-1 win in the Blue Toon’s first competitive game of the season.

There was little between the teams in the first half. The home side went in front after 8 minutes. Rory McAllister whipped in a cross from the right wing and David Cox pounced to the thrash in the opener from six yards.

The start could have been so different had it not been for Peterhead’s Graeme Smith. The inspirational stopper made a brilliant save from an Alan Trouten header after 3 minutes.

The Toon might have added to their tally, Ryan McCann setting up Jordan Brown who scooped his shot over then McAllister set up fellow former Brechin player Jamie Redman who shot wide.

As half time approached City came into the game. Allan Walker saw a low 25 yard free kick grabbed at the second attempt by Smith but on half time they equalised.

More tricky work Bobby Barr saw a cross come in from the left to the edge of the six yard box. Ryan Strachan and Andy Jackson both went for the ball with the final touch came off the unfortunate defender for an own goal.

From the re-start Toon captain Steven Noble pushed forward and slipped a pass inside the penalty area to McAllister but his curled shot faded beyond the right hand post.

There was concern when Scott Ross sustained a knee injury in a collision awith and he hobbled off in pain.

Just when extra time looked a distinct possibility, the Toon broke forward in the 73rd minute. Dean Cowie played a beautifully weighted pass into the right side of the penalty area towards Brown. Brechin felt the young midfield was in an offside position but he let the ball run past him before picking his spot with a low shot into the far corner for what proved to be the winner.
