Maud were pipped at the post in the second round of the GA Engineering Inter Regional Cup on Saturday by Deveronside.

It was the visitors from Banff who started the better and Clark found himself unmarked at the back post and Barbour had to react quickly to make a fine save.

Phillip was next to try a shot from outside the box which Barbour in the home goal saved comfortably.

The home side were dealt a blow after 15 minutes when they were reduced to 10 men after a rash tackle by Donald Fraser who wasn’t helped by the reaction of the Deveronside players who surrounded the official and was then sent off.

Davidson made some space on the right and his cross was met by Smith whose header was held under the bar by Barbour.

On the half-hour mark a long ball forward was chased down by home striker Conway who then clashed with away keeper Tait who required treatment after the clash.

The visitors took the lead after 38 minutes when they were awarded a freekick just outside the 18-yard box and Blackwell curled the Ball past the wall and into the bottom corner of the net.

Maud’s best effort came just on the stroke of half time when a ball was swung in and Conway reacted first but could only head straight into Tait’s hands.

Maud made a change at half time with Barbour replaced Morrice and the home side came out strong in the second half and were far the better team.

From a Conway cross, Chalmers’ header was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Tait.

Ten minutes into the second half and Maud were level when a Conway cross was deflected on at the front post and Tait could only parry the ball into the path of Richard Kirk who headed home.

On a quick break upfield, Flett played a cross ball to McClay who hit a fierce drive from 25 yards which went inches over the bar.

Ten minutes from time the away side went ahead for a second time when Lobban hit a shot which home keeper Barbour miss judged and the ball crept into the net.

Maud made another change with Duguid replacing Chalmers.

Barbour ,who did well after coming on in the second half, went passed two defenders and his fierce shot was brilliantly blocked by Mill inside the box.

Last chance of the game fell to Thompson who was one-on-one with Barbour in the Maud goal but he blazed his shot wide of the goals.

The visitors were the better team in the first half, but 10 man Maud fought hard in the second half and nearly took the tie to a penalty shootout.

Richard Kirk, playing only his second game of the season in defence, once more was the pick of the bunch for the home side. Maud would like to thank sponsors NAVITAS International Solutions.
