Longside nailed by late fightback

THERE was more Superleague disappointment for Longside after they again lost a late goal in the closing stages of a match.

They went into the break at half-time well on top but credit to Deveronside they found another gear in the second period and really piled on the pressure.

But Longside will have to stop giving away soft goals if they are going to win matches and climb the table.

In the first minute a Whyte cross was cleared as far as Cardno and his shot was deflected for a corner, Little’s kick came to nothing.

A poor clearance by Tait was blocked by Butcher but the ball bounced back into the keeper’s arms. The visitors took the lead in the 3rd minute when a harmless ball into the middle should have been dealt with by the Longside defence and Billy Walker was first to react and prod it into the net.

Little did well before sending Whyte clear and his cross was cleared for a corner, Davidson’s kick was deep to the far post but the ball was headed clear. Thomson sent over a dangerous cross for Deveronside but Whyte was there to make the clearance.

At the other end a Stainton cross was cleared out to Little on the edge of the box but he blasted his shot wide. Milne had a shot from 25 yards which went wide but Thomson had it covered. A Legge free kick was fisted clear by Thomson but it fell to Smith and he stabbed it wide.

Butcher had a great turn and shot from inside the box but it hit the inside of the post before going clear with Tait beaten. Longside had to make a forced change in 26 minutes when Panton replaced the injured Davidson. A Legge free kick was headed for a clear by Norris.

Longside equalised on the half hour mark when a Norris cross was deflected into the air and Sean Butcher pounced to clip the ball over the advancing keeper. The home side took the lead seven minutes later when Ryan Duncan latched onto a Donaldson clearance before guiding the ball past Tait.

A good move with Duncan and Little finished with the latter crossing for Butcher but he sent his header over the bar.

Longside were well on top at this stage and they had strong claims for a penalty when Little weaved his way into the box but the referee waved play on. Smith tried a shot from 25 yards but it was well wide.

A Thomson corner minutes into the second half was met by McLeay but he headed the ball wide from ten yards. Flett was then brought down just outside the box, McLeay’s strike went narrowly over the bar. A Taylor free kick was cleared out to Little at the edge of the box but his shot was well saved by keeper Tait.

The home side had a great chance to extend their lead when Cardno broke clear but his shot was saved by keeper Tait, Butcher was first to the rebound but his shot was blocked being cleared. Minutes later Duncan had a chance but he drilled his shot into the side netting.

Deveronside equalised in 65 minutes when a Ross Thomson free kick found John McLeay and he headed the ball past Thomson. Longside had a good chance when they broke clear with Whyte but he fired the ball behind for a goal kick when he was in a good position.

Another dangerous free kick from Legge was headed clear by Norris. A Duncan shot from 25 yards went well wide. A Whyte free kick was met by Taylor but he headed the ball straight at Tait from eight yards.

The visitors struck the winner with two minutes remaining when another Ross Thomson free kick found Mike Smith all on his own and he headed past Thomson.
