Longside into next round of the Cup thanks to last-minute winner from Butcher

EastEnd 2

Longside 3

Longside travelled to play East End on Saturday in the first round of the A&M Property Maintenance Morrison Cup.

End made the brighter start and Dean Allan made two superb saves to deny Nacef and Mbarki.

At the other end a Liam Allan corner found Fraser Davidson and his shot was cleared off the line. Minutes later Christie was in the thick of the action again when he sent a teasing ball across the face of the Longside goal but it went out for a goalkick.

The deadlock was broken in the 23rd minute when Stuart Fraser’s 30-yard shot deceived Dean Allan to give the home side the lead.

A good move from Longside saw Taylor find Butcher and his cross was well saved by Baldwin as Steele was set to score.

A minute before half time the scores were level, Fraser Davidson and Taylor combined on the right and Sean Butcher was in the middle to apply the finishing touch.

A Mackie free kick was met by Fraser Davidson and he slipped his man before firing in a shot which was brilliantly saved by Baldwin.

Right from the restart Steele sent Mackie clear and he cut inside but his shot from the edge of the box was straight at the keeper.

The visitors took the lead however in 55 minutes when Butcher sent Ross Mackie clear and he fired a shot past the keeper from a difficult angle.

A Christie corner found Johnston and his effort was well saved by Dean Allan.

Longside had a great chance to increase their lead when a Liam Allan free kick was headed over by Fraser Davidson from 12 yards.

With 61 minutes gone the home side equalised, a McLelland corner found Paul Rennie in the box and he made no mistake from close range.

A Johnston shot from 30 yards went narrowly over the bar. Fraser Davidson did well to send Steele clear but he hesitated and the chance was gone.

A 30 yard free kick from Butcher was saved by Baldwin. East End had a half chance when Christie slipped the ball across the face of the Longside goal but it was just too far in front of McLelland.

Longside made two changes in quick succession, Jamieson and Ramsay replacing Fraser Davidson and Liam Allan. Butcher slipped the ball into the path of Jamieson but Baldwin made a fine save. The visitors finished strongly forcing four corners in the closing minutes with Steele and Jamieson going close.

With penalties looking the likely outcome to decide the tie Longside were awarded a free kick 25 yards out when Mackie was upended.

Ramsay’s shot was brilliantly saved by Baldwin but Mackie was first to react sending it back into the middle for Sean Butcher to force the ball over the line. This time it was Longside’s turn to grab a last-minute goal.

Their wasn’t much between the teams but Longside maybe just shaded things in the second half and finished strongly.

Longside are at home to neighbours Buchanhaven Hearts this Friday night in the PMAC Group First Division East, with a 7.45pm kick-off.
