Longside fightback earns a well deserved draw

LONGSIDE travelled to play Sunnybank on Saturday in the Superleague. In the opening minutes a Greig corner was bravely saved by Thomson at the feet of Burke. Campbell had a great chance for Longside when he was gifted the ball just inside the opposing half but he drove forward before the Bank defence got back to clear.

A Panton free kick to the far post was met by Porter who knocked it back into the danger area but Thomson was on hand to get the ball clear.

The home side forced three corners in quick succession but from the third Geddes managed to get the ball clear. A long clearance from Sweeney saw Fettes get on the end of it but his tame effort was straight at Thomson.

Longside had a good chance when a Beddie pass was flicked on by Danton for Porter but his low shot went narrowly wide with the keeper beaten. Minutes later Danton found Porter with another back header and he played the ball to Panton on the edge of the box but his shot went well wide.

Sweeney was the home savior again when he punched a Cowie free kick to safety.

Steel looked set to score for Sunnybank when he he found himself in front of goal 12 yards out but his shot was blocked before being cleared.

Sunnybank opened the scoring in 49 minutes after they were awarded a free kick 40 yards out, David Greig sent a thunderous strike into the top right hand corner leaving Thomson helpless. Murray got on the end of a Carrol cross but his looping header went over the bar.

Minutes later Campbell ran onto a Danton pass but again Sweeney was swiftly off his line to make the save. Greig ran clear on the right before finding Murray in the middle and his shot was brilliantly saved by Thomson. A Cowie cross was played into Porter by Danton but his shot was deflected for a corner, Cowie’s kick found Craik at the back post but his header went wide.

Black had a chance when he was sent clear by Campbell but again Sweeney saved at the expense of a corner, Cowie’s kick was scrambled to safety. Longside scored a deserved equaliser in 68 minutes when a Cowie corner was headed back across goal by Craik for David Black to head into the net. Longside made a change seven minutes later when Cameron replaced Campbell. A Danton free kick from 25 yards struck the bar before going out for a goal kick.

Longside would have settled for a point before the game but in the end will be very disappointed not to have come away with all three. They played well again as a team with the back four looking very solid. A good fast flowing end to end game with both sides serving up some entertaining football.

This Saturday Longside are at home to Stonehaven in the Superleague with a 2.30pm kick-off.
