Longside edged out by Stonehaven

Longside had Stonehaven as visitors in their last home PMAC superleague match of the season on Saturday.

The visitors nearly got off to the perfect start in the third minute when Shand had a free header eight yards out but his weak effort was easily gathered by Pennet.

Longside took the lead on seven minutes when Cardno found Little in the box and he slipped the ball past the advancing Smith.

Longside doubled their lead on 12 minutes when Marchi picked up a loose ball 35 yards out and fired an unstopable left foot shot into the top corner giving Smith no chance.

On 22 minutes Stonehaven were awarded a free kick 30 yards out but Pennet easily saved Horne’s effort. Workman then cut in from the left wing and tried a shot which hit the post and rebounded to safety.

Norris then made a brilliant interception in his own box and from the resulting break upfield Little blazed over the bar from ten yards.

Pennet then parried an effort from Horne and did well to clear the loose ball with two attackers closing in on him.

Stonehaven got a goal back on 45 minutes when the ball was laid off to Forsyth who curled it past Pennet from 12 yards.

Disaster struck Longside on 48 minutes when Donaldson lost control of the ball 25 yards out allowing Horne a clear run on goal only to be brought down by Donaldson resulting in a straight red card for the defender.

The resulting free kick came to nothing.

Stonehaven then got level on the hour mark when a free kick from the touchline by Stewart evaded everyone including Pennet in goal.

In the 68th minute Taylor found space in the box from a corner only to see his header strike the bar.

Minutes later the same player had a volley that again hit the bar. Stonehaven then got the winner on 75 minutes when Forsyth laid the ball off to Horne who fired past Pennet from 18 yards.

Longside were reduced to nine men in injury time when Marchi was shown a straight red card for comments made to the referee.

This was a disappointing result after being two goals up with a depleted squad but the five minutes either side of half time proved crucial to the outcome.

Longside play their last match of the season away to Maud tonight (Tuesday) with a 7.15pm kick-off.
