Junior Cup woe for Longside

Longside travelled to Glasgow on Saturday to play St.Anthonys in the Emirates Scottish Junior cup second round replay.

The home side got off to a great start in the third minute when after an Arthur tackle on the edge of the box the ball broke to keeper Thomson who picked it up only for the referee to award a free kick which was touched back to Thomas Miller to fire low into the back of the net.

The visitors replied when Stainton played the ball out to Porter who crossed over to Walker who had a half chance before the ball fell to Butcher but his weak effort was easily saved by Carr.

In the 17th minute Whyte put in a cross that Butcher beat the keeper to and the ball broke kindly for Walker but he volleyed high over the bar.

Butcher then sent Stainton clear but the keeper came out and gathered the ball at his feet. In the 22nd minute the ball broke to the saints Miller on the edge of the Longside 18-yard box and he fired a shot just over the bar.

Longside went straight up the park and Porter got to the byeline sent over a lovely ball but their was no takers and the chance was gone. The home side’s Dickson ran clear and his cross was cleared as far as Thomas but his effort failed to trouble Thomson.

The visitors lost a second goal right on the stroke of half time when Gary Dickson found space 25 yards out and he curled his shot in off the post with Thomson helpless.

Longside got back into the game in the 50th minute when Stainton found Scott Porter on the right and he cut inside and beat the keeper at his near post with a powerful shot.

They then had a lucky escape three minutes later when a free kick found O’Donnell in a great position but he fired the ball over the top. In the 69th minute a Miller cross was well cleared by Stainton under pressure.

The visitors then nearly got the equaliser they were looking for when Bruce laid the ball off to Stainton and his 25-yard shot struck the post and rebounded to safety with Carr beaten.

Longside were then reduced to ten men in 80 minutes when Stainton foolishly kicked the ball at a St.Anthonys played lying on the ground and was shown a straight red card.

Arthur then cleared a shot from Borriss off the line with Thomson beaten.

The hosts completed the scoring in 84 minutes when McKay crossed the ball in for JOHN BORRISS to head into the back of Thomsons goal.

Longside can count themselves very unlucky as over the two games there wasn’t much between the teams and either team could have gone into the third round draw.

This Saturday Longside are at away to Lewis Utd. in the PMAC group superleague (ko:2.00pm).
