Hermes give Longside six of the best

Longside travelled to play league leaders Hermes on Saturday in the Superleague. Wyness for Hermes had an early chance but he drove his shot wide of the target.

The visitors forced a corner, Whyte’s kick was cleared upfield. Madel saw his shot blocked, he was first to the loose ball but his shot was straight at Grant.

Hermes took the lead in 12th minute when a free kick was played into the path of Marek Madle and he scored from 12 yards. A minute later Grant made a brilliant point blank save to turn away a Wyness header.

The home side went two ahead in the 20th minute when Mark Hamilton brilliantly steered the ball in off the post from 25 yards. A Whyte free kick for Longside was headed clear by McKenzie as Norris looked set to score.

A Middleton corner was met by McKenzie but he couldn’t direct his header on target.

The home side increased their lead in 42 minutes when Longside failed to get the ball clear and when it was swept back into the area Sam McKenzie sent a bullet header past Grant.

Early in the second half, Whyte and Campbell took a short corner before Whyte tried a shot but his effort went well wide.

A Hamilton corner found McKenzie but he headed the ball over the bar.

Three minutes later Hermes scored a fifth when Vojtech Havlin latched onto a poor pass back before rounding Grant and stroking the ball home.

Longside made a double change when Panton and Porter were replaced by Butcher and Usher.

Longside did pull a goal back in 74 minutes when Campbell sent Ross Cardno clear and he took the ball round Sweeney before finding the net from 12 yards.

With 80 minutes gone Donaldson replaced Whyte for Longside.

The home side were awarded a penalty when Hermes substitute Smith was adjudged to have been fouled in the box, Steven Watson made an expert job from the spot putting Grant the wrong way.

This was a bad day at the office for Longside who never recovered from losing the two early goals.

Hermes were clinical in their play and showed why they are sitting at the top of the league and on this form will take some catching.

The Longside players will have to show a lot more desire and determination if they are going to climb up the table.

This Saturday Longside are at home to Banks O’Dee in the Superleague (kick-off 2pm).
