Hearts pipped for cup semi place

BUCHANHAVEN Hearts travelled to Elgin to take on Inverness City in a Morrison Cup Quarter Final.

Surprisingly there was no snow but a bitter swirling wind made conditions difficult.

Hearts were first to attack and Scott McLeod put the City defence under pressure but the danger was cleared. A long ball from MacLeod put Hearts under pressure but Bennett blocked well from Sanderson’s effort.

City kept up the pressure and took the lead when a cross from Munro wasn’t cleared and Kerr cut the ball back for Sanderson to score from close range.

A Forbes free kick should have brought Hearts the equaliser but Watson was slow to react and the chance was gone, then Kris Keith won the ball on the edge of the box and put over a good cross but their were no Hearts players in the box.

City then had a couple of chances but Hearts held out and went in at half-time one down with all still to play for.

Hearts came out looking for the equaliser and subbed Cunningham for the injured Keiran Forbes. A shocking tackle by Sanderson on Abolehassam saw the referee just give a yellow card when it warranted a straight red.

Hearts came close when a long ball saw McLeod jink past a couple of players but Young saved well. Hearts then did finally equalise when Mair did well down the left and his cross was handled in the box by Morrison and a penalty was awarded. Kris Keith stepped up to shoot past Young to make it 1-1.

It was now game on and the injured Abolehassam was subbed for McLean.

Both teams were looking for the winner and Hearts should have scored when a long ball out of defence saw Watson outpace McLeod and his shot was saved by Young to deny Hearts the lead.

The Raemoss Park boys survived a late barrage of corners from City and the tie ended and went to penalty kicks with the Inverness side eventually going through 5-4.

This was a good battling display from Hearts who more than matched the Inverness side and the desire and hunger from the Buchanhaven players was there to be seen and hopefully it will continue into next week’s game.

Hearts next game is at home to Nairn St. Ninian in a league encounter on Saturday with a kick off time of 2pm.
