Football: Hearts misfire against league leaders

Bridge of Don Thistle showed why they are top of the league with a resolute 3-0 victory over Buchanhaven Hearts.

The leaders proved difficult for Hearties to break down and took their chances when they came.

Hearts took on Thistle in a Division 1 East match at a windy Raemoss Park.

Thistle started well and Duff sent in a dangerous cross which Fuerst was happy to see go past.

Mair had a good run down the right but Thistle cleared as Ballard waited to pounce.

Thistle’s Gunn tried an effort but went over the bar.

Then Thistle went ahead when a long clearance from keeper Burr was headed on and Danton volleyed a great shot past Fuerst to put Thistle 1-0 up.

Mair again got down the right and his cross just evaded Davidson at the back post. Then Ballard cut inside but Burr saved his shot.

Thistle were awarded a soft penalty when Davidson was adjudged to have pulled down Duff but justice was done when Fuerst saved Gunn’s penalty.

But Hearts shot themselves in the foot when Abolehassam was short with a passback and Danton was pulled down by Cunningham in the box.

Gunn’s penalty just beat Fuerst to put Thistle 2-0 up.

Ligertwood then hit a free kick just over as the half time whistle blew.

Hearts had the breeze in their favour but were finding it hard to break down a resolute defence.

Hearts came close when a corner from Davidson was scrambled clear by Craik on the line.

Mair tried to break down the right and cut inside but his left foot shot was blocked.

Thistle countered and Duff beat Abolehassam and his shot was saved by Fuerst but the ball broke to Dick who forced the ball over the line to make it 3-0.

Hearts kept on pressing but could not penetrate the Thistle defence and keeper Burr, on top form, saved late on from Keith and Ballard as Hearts fought for some pride.

The last 10 minutes were played in near darkness and Hearts came close on a number of occasions but it was not their day.

Hearts will look for a better performance away to Sunnybank on Saturday, January 4 (KO 1.30pm).
