Football: Excellent performance from on-fire Maud

junior football

Maud travelled to play Ellon United in a league game and the away side started the game sprightly when Barbour laid a ball into the path of Chalmers whose shot went well wide of the goals.

A fine move by the visitors saw Graham’s cross met by Chalmers but Whelan made an excellent block in the box.

On nine minutes Maud were forced into a change with the injured Fraser coming off to be replaced by Duguid.

The home side’s first chance came when Morrice ran past threeplayers into the penalty box but his cross went over the bar. A ball forward to Duguid saw him hold off his marker but his left foot shot was excellently saved by Buckley.

Maud winger Alexander was causing the home defence a lot of trouble with his pace. He was sent clear on the left and he fired a cross in and it hit the top of the crossbar and over.

The visitors came close with a Chalmers shot which was blocked by Millson then S, Bremner had an opening on the right but dragged his shot wide.

Just on half time Barbour tested the home keeper from the edge of the box and Bucklay gathered the ball at the second attempt.

Into the second half and the home side’s Stewart had a snap shot from distance which went well wide of the goals. Barbour again tested the home keeper when he drove into the box and his shot was heading for the bottom corner of the net until Bucklay made a great one-handed save pushing the ball round the post.

Maud thought they had taken the lead from an Alexander corner and Barbour headed home but he was judged to have fouled the keeper.

A rare attack by the home side’s Morrice saw him send in a great cross into the six-yard box where keeper Barbour easily gathered.

On 64 minutes the visitors took a deserved lead when a long ball over the top of the Ellon defence which Duguid latched onto and he coolly lobbed the home keeper from the edge of the box.

Maud then made their second change with Hale replacing S. Bremner.

On a break up field Stewart crossed for Tremaine on the left. Hale sent in a couple of dangerous crosses which had the home defence scrambling before clearing.

A poor kic- out by Barbour fell to Thomson whose shot was parried by Barbour before clearing.

With two minutes remaining a third change by the visitors came when Ritchie replaced Chalmers.

The final chance of the game came to Maud when Alexander fed Barbour who laid a ball on to Hale but his shot was blocked by Reid.

This was a match which Maud controlled from start to finish with the home side rarely troubling the Maud goals.

The only thing missing was more goals.

This was an excellent performance with the whole team playing their part and another clean sheet will please the defence.
