MAUD reached the knockout stages of the Grill League Cup at the expense of Buchan derby rivals Longside at the weekend.

It was a disappointing display from the home side with missed chances and mistakes contrinuting to their downfall.

On the flip side Maud played some really good football and looked a lot hungrier to full deserve their 3-1 victory.

At the kick-off Longside knew only a win would be good enough to progress into the knockout stages as Maud had a far superior goal difference.

The visitors had the better of the early exchanges with Duguid and Hall going close. Longside’s first effort on goal was an 18-yard shot from Duncan which went narrowly wide.

Duncan was sent clear in the 16th minute but was fouled just outside the box by Joe Barbour, the Maud keeper escaping with a yellow card. Minutes later Duncan went off injured and was replaced by Butcher.

Ritchie did well to cut the ball back for Duguid on the penalty spot but he fired the ball over the bar. Maud took the lead in the 33rd minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box, Allan Hale made an expert job guiding it into the bottom corner of the net.

Morrice then burst clear for Maud beating the offside trap but his shot was well saved by Duffy. At the other end Longside had a great chance to draw level when Donaldson sent Cardno clear but his shot was saved by Joe Barbour.

Minutes later Norris picked out Butcher with a great pass but he rushed his shot and dragged it wide. Just on half time a well struck shot from Luke Barbour was blocked by Duffy.

Maud doubled their advantage in 54 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Duffy had fouled Morrice, Hale made no mistake from the spot.

Shortly after Rae saw his 20-yard strike saved by Duffy.

On the hour mark Rae weaved his way into the box and his goalbound effort was brilliantly turned round the post by Duffy, from the resultant corner Duffy fisted the ball clear as far as Hale and he smashed it into the back of the net.

Longside pulled a goal back four minutes later when they played a short coner and Stainton whipped the ball in for Ryan Donaldson and he stabbed it home.

Morrice again ran clear for Maud and his shot was saved by Duffy before Beddie completed the clearance. Butcher then gathered the ball for Longside and his shot was saved by Joe Barbour at the second attempt.

Ritchie went close for Maud when he just failed to get on the end of a Luke Barbour knock down.

With ten minutes remaining Little replaced Donaldson for Longside. Luke Barbour then saw his shot cleared off the line by Bruce. A Porter cross found Cardno eight yards out but he dragged his shot wide.

Longside next face more Buchan derby rivalry in the form of Buchanhaven Hearts at Raemoss Park on Saturday (2pm) in the Inter Regional Cup.
