Campaign starts with defeat for Cruden Bay

CRUDEN Bay started their PMAC Division Two campaign against Whitehills on Saturday, with the sun shining and a good attendance.

The Bay also included their recent transfer signings from Fraserbugh in their squad.

The Bay started the game as the better of the two sides, putting pressure on the visitors with their neat passing movements.

After 32 minutes this pressure paid off when they were awarded a penalty after Whyte was tripped in the box. Whyte got up and took the spot kick but, unfortunately for the Bay, Mackie saved the attacker’s effort.

Having had this let-off the visitors were stung into action and, conversely, the Bay’s heads went down.

This resulted in Whitehills taking the lead after 38 minutes when J. Watt pounced on a poor clearance from the Bay defence to fire the ball past Gatt in the home goal.

The visitors increased their lead a few minutes later when a cross from the right was converted by Thomson.

After the interval, the Bay came out all fired up and immediately went onto the attack, creating several chances, none of which were converted.

Despite the pressure the Bay found themselves three down on 62 minutes when slack defending and a mix up in the home defence allowed J. Watt to nip in and score his second goal of the game.

Although three down, the Bay went onto the attack and again had most of the play. Several chances were created by the home side but, due to poor finishing and some inspired goalkeeping by Mackie, none were converted.

The Bay, did however, get the goal that their pressure warranted when Nicoll stabbed the ball home in the final minute following a set piece.

This scoreline flattered the visitors somewhat and had the Bay converted some of their chances, especially the first have penalty, the result could have been different.

The Bay now have two tough games in their section of the Grill League Cup, an away game at Colony Park tonight (Tuesday) and then at home to Islavale on Saturday with a 2pm kick-off.

CRUDEN BAY: Gatt, Tocher, Buchan, Nicoll, Sime, Park, Mair, Lawrence, Walker, Inglis, Hyte. Subs: Wilby, Lawrinson, Wisely, Leslie, Watson.
