Longside Tennis Club hosted the annual Awards Evening for the Buchan Tennis League Association.

The League includes tennis clubs from across the rural Northeast - including Oldmeldrum, Ellon, Longside, and Udny.

This year the final event of the year was held in Longside Parish Hall.

Playing in the Buchan league involves clubs in tennis matches during the summer on Sunday afternoons with mixed teams of two ladies and two men.

There are other competitions and tournaments at the end of the season.

Over thirty members and friends, young and older, took part in an indoor curling tournament in the hall in teams of four.

The six teams played against each other with a final between the top two teams.

Winners of this tournament were Isla and Ann Overton, Karen Norval and Graham Sutherland.

All the participants then enjoyed a wonderful feast as members of the various clubs had brought ‘pot luck dishes’ to the buffet table.

Brenda Sutherland, BTLA chairperson presented the Awards for the year.

The winner of the League was Ellon Tennis Club, while Udny won the Challenge cup.

The Junior Trophy was presented to the Longside junior players.

In the Ladies Doubles, Karen Norval and Sheila Reid (Udny TC) collected the magnificent shield while Zena Gourlay amd Colette Penny (Ellon TC) were the runners-up.

Richard Tallon and Ross McKinstry (Ellon TC) won the Mens Doubles trophy and James Noble and Lewis Sutherland (Longside TC) were the runners-up.

The Mixed Doubles tournament was won by Robin Falconer and Karen Norval (Udny TC).

The Buchan Tennis League will start the 2017 season with the AGM in March 2017.

The League is always hopeful that more clubs are able to join, especially those who have played in the past but unable to field teams this year.

There is no doubt that through organising teams, match play, competitions and coaching that tennis clubs can offer opportunities to young and older players alike and enjoy a sport played throughout the world.
