Excellent display from Hearts

HEARTS took on New Elgin in a First Division match at Raemoss Park on Saturday.

Hearts were first out of the traps when a Sandison shot tested Wilkinson in New Elgin’s goal. The visitors hit back and a cross from Black almost found Connelly but Donaldson cleared well.

Hearts won a free kick when Barbour was fouled and Glendinning’s free kick from 20 yards hit the wall and was cleared. Hearts almost got the breakthrough when Barbour turned Sime but Wilkinson saved well at his near post.

The goal was not long in coming and Hearts got it in 35 minutes when Barbour flicked home a knock down from Sandison after a cross from the right to put them one up.

New Elgin thought they had eqialised but Ford was given offside after a scramble in the Hearts box. Just on half time Shaun Cunningham almost made it 2-0 but Wilkinson stopped his effort with a good save.

At the re-start Hearts went looking for a second goal to finish the game and Barbour went close after a Glendinning cross. Hearts broke down the left and Barbour should have crossed for Sandison to score easily but Wilkinson saved then lost the ball and took down Barbour for a certain penalty. Barbour scored easily to put Hearts 2-0 ahead. Hearts then made it 3-0 when Glendinning got down the left and the ball broke to him and he shot past Wilkinson. Hearts took the foot off the gas and New Elgin pulled a goal back through Shanks. Hearts substitute Whyte missed from two yards out after a cutback, then he got himself sent off after a tussle with Henderson who was also shown the red card. Hearts wrapped up the points when Mitchell handled a McLeod shot on the line and was sent off. Barbour dispatched the penalty with ease to get his hat trick and seal the points for the home side.

This was an excellent performance from Hearts and they fully deserved the three points, while the match saw another hat trick for the in-form Scott Barbour.

Hearts’ next game is in the Regional Cup at home to Banks O’ Dee with a 2pm kick-off.
