Young Driver roadshow for Peterhead

Grampian Police is hoping to drive home road safety messages at Young Driver Roadshow in the Blue Toon later this month.

The event at Peterhead’s Balmoor Retail Park on Thursday, May 26 from 6.30pm is aimed at informing young motorists about the dangers of the road. Last year officers spoke to more than 350 young drivers.

And Road Safety Grampian is hoping the scheme will help slash the number of young people being involved in road traffic collisions after a 9% reduction last year.

PC Raymond Neil said: “We have an ongoing commitment to reduce the number of people being killed or seriously injured in road traffic collisions in the North-east and this is done through the five Es – Engineering, Encouragement, Enforcement, Education and Evaluation.”

The roadshows are set to continue this year, and will follow a similar format with the use of brake reaction timers to assess your reaction times and let you feel the positive effect of wearing a seatbelt on our seatbelt convincer.

The roadshows will also give motorists an indication of how their ability is impaired by the effects of drink or drugs by using impairment goggles.

Officers will also be on hand to give safety tips on vehicle maintenance, as well as the opportunity of having a demonstration drive by an Advanced Police Driver.

PC Neil said: “Whilst last year’s events were well attended and appeared to be well received, we are always looking at ways to attract more people to attend.

“This year, Road Safety Grampian came up with an incentive to encourage young drivers, parents and family members to come along and chat with the emergency services in an informal environment.

“If you actively participate, your details will be entered into a free prize draw, with one lucky winner from each area being selected to take part in a Go Kart and other activities event being held at the Lochter Activity Centre, Oldmeldrum on August 31 between 6pm and 8pm.”

Those attending can also test their driving skills against Advanced Police Drivers in a time trial race, with the winner receiving a certificate, trophy and the satisfaction of knowing that they were better than the rest.

They will also have the opportunity of winning several donated gifts including a 2-tonne trolley jack and car wash kit donated by Halfords of Peterhead.
