A Peterhead dental practice has welcomed a new associate dentist from Strichen.

Karyn Urquhart joined Stevensons Dental Surgery in early August after completing a postgraduate course in dentistry at the University of Aberdeen.

The 27-year-old is now based in Aberdeen, where she originally studied biomedical science, and commutes from the city to the surgery in Marischal Street.

She said: “I didn’t always want to be a dentist. I was 16 when I had to pick what to do and 17 when I went to uni.

“Biomedical science was something that interested me and it was during that course that I decided I wanted to specialise.

“A new dentistry school opened at the University of Aberdeen so it was perfect.”

In her first full-time position, Miss Urquhart joins senior dentist Stephen Court.

Mr Court said: “Up until now there has always been a shortage of dentists in Scotland but now more and more are training.”

The national shortage has affected Stevensons Dental Surgery and Mr Court and his colleagues have had to turn patients away for several years.

Now with the arrival of Miss Urquhart, the surgery is now accepting NHS patients again.
