Wind farm considered by councillors

Councillors considered plans for a major wind turbine development at a meeting of the Buchan Area Committee recently.

Committee members were asked to consider the plan for an Offshore Windfarm and Deployment Centre at Aberdeen Bay which would see the creation of 11 turbines.

The application, from Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm Limited, has already been considered by the Formartine Area Committee.

Commenting, Councillor Alan Buchan raised concerns about the windfarm. He pointed out that the Ministry of Defence has raised concerns about MoD radar equipment being susceptible to interference due to large numbers of wind turbines. Cllr Buchan also questioned the impact to wildlife and the marine eco-system.

Councillor Tom Malone had reservations relating to the close proximity of the windfarm site to the Forvie Nature Reserve, Newburgh.

The application will now go to the council’s Infrastructure Services Committee. The council’s views will then be submitted to Marine Scotland.
