Teenage cyclist dies after road crash

Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses following the death of a teenage cyclist on the A975 Newburgh to Cruden Bay road last night.

14-year-old Connor Shields from Ellon was struck by a Volvo XC90 at about 6pm near the crossroads junction with the B9003 road to Collieston.

He was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by air ambulance but died due to multiple injuries. The 59 year old male motorist was uninjured.

The road was closed for approximately six hours while collision investigators carried out an examination of the scene.

Inspector Ewan Innes from the Aberdeenshire and Moray Division Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the boy’s family and friends at this very distressing time.

“Our enquiries are at an early stage and at this time it is too early to speculate as to the cause of the collision. The boy was in a group of five or six pedal cyclists who were travelling from Collieston to the Ellon area, and I would ask that anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who has any information relating to this collision to get in touch with us.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous.
