A Peterhead student has swapped a traditional career path for a life on the sea working as an officer on-board luxury superyachts.

Jake Strachan, 18, is currently on phase one of the Professional Yacht Cadetship (PYC) at leading maritime training provider and youth charity UKSA, on the Isle of Wight.

Jake began his training in October 2016 and has just graduated from the first phase of the course.

The PYC combines study sessions and sea phase training to prepare the cadets for a life as a deckhand, whilst training for a long-term career on superyachts.

During the graduation ceremony held at UKSA, Jake was presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award, an Outstanding Academic Achievement and was also named the Crewfo Top Cadet.

Jake said: “I picked the course because yachts fascinate me and it provided me with the quickest way into the industry.

“You gain a lot of good qualifications and it puts you in good stead for starting off in the industry.”

Jake added: “This has been the best experience.”
